Profile:

I worked as a primary and secondary school teacher for 5 years before studying Sociology at Sussex University from 1966 to 1969 – interesting times ! I studied Social Work at Sussex and then worked as a social worker in a Child Guidance Clinic where I could integrate my commitment to education and to social work. I was very fortunate to be appointed as a Lecturer on the professional social work programme at Sussex – including 5 years as Course Director.

I emigrated to Perth in 1987 to take up a Lectureship in Social Work and Social Administration at UWA. I have enjoyed opportunities to teach, to develop new courses, to try to enhance the quality of fieldwork education and to work with colleagues in a range of local agencies on research and consultancy projects. Since 2000 I have been the Head of Department – now the Discipline Chair – of Social Work and Social Policy and working with my colleagues to develop teaching and research links with colleagues from within UWA and from government and non-government agencies. In all of our efforts, I was delighted to learn that the BSW programme at UWA was viewed by recent graduates as a very successful programme in the most recent Course Experience Questionnaire study.
